What is a phrase?

A phrase is one or more words that form a meaningful grammatical unit within a clause. There are five main types of phrase in English, as below.

There are five different types of phrases in English and they are,

1)     Noun phrase

v My small dog barks at ducks.

v All passengers with tickets can board now.

2)     Adjective phrase

v He has clever ideas.

v It was a very big meal.

3)     Adverb phrase

v Please do it now.

v He spoke very softly.

4)     Verb phrase

v She has been waiting for an hour already. 

v will be going to France next week.

5)     Prepositional phrase

v The cat jumped onto the counter.

v They were arguing about money.
