2.3 CAUSE AND EFFECT

                                          2.3 Cause and Effect

What is Cause and effect?
Cause and effect is a relationship between events or things, where one is the result of the other or others. This is a combination of action and reaction. Something happens (a cause) that leads to an effect. Boost your understanding of this important concept by reviewing some key cause and effect examples.

Cause-and-effect sentences

Sentences built using cause and effect show a direct relationship between two events. They help readers understand that one event triggered the other. You can identify cause-and-effect sentences by looking for the following words:

v So

v Since

v When

v Because

v As a result of

v Therefore

v Consequently

Keep in mind that the cause is usually written before the effect. But in some sentences, the writer may list the effect first. No matter how the writer ordered their sentence, the effect can’t happen before the cause. The cause always triggers the effect.

Examples.

v Because the alarm was not set, we were late for work.

v Since school was canceled, we went to the mall.

v John made a rude comment so Elise hit him.

v You will score good grades in your finals if you start studying now.

v The baby was crying therefore Dad picked him up.
